About Bachelor Of Applied Information Technology in Waikato Institute of Technology (Wintec)

Summary

Students in this programme will gain a strong foundation of knowledge across a broad range of different information technology skills, as well as an advanced level of expertise in a selected specialisation.

Students will undertake core modules that cover the fundamental skills required for a career in IT, for example; software engineering, database architecture, web development, business analysis, communications technology, operating systems, systems administration, and network engineering.  Students will also gain practical, industry-aligned skills that employers demand from our graduates as well as new and emerging fields including: cloud computing, big data and analytics, DevOps, business intelligence, agile development, web and mobile app development, games development, AR/VR, intrusion detection, vulnerability assessment, and security.

Our degree is also designed to provide students with a broad skill-set and holistic understanding of the wider context of the IT business domain and the global IT industry, as well as specialist knowledge in a specific area. Technologies and tools used within the degree are ever updating but currently include: python, C#.net, Visual Studio, Java, Android development, MS Server, Active Directory, Unity3D, Unreal, Cisco, Fortinet, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, Laravel, PHP, MySQL, SQL Server, Oracle, Power BI, AWS, Azure, Hadoop, and much more.

Specialisations

In the first three semesters students will gain a strong foundation of knowledge across a broad range of different IT skills. After that, they will gain an advanced level of expertise in one of four selected specialisations, each of which are aligned to the four most in-demand IT employment pathways, specialisations are:

  • Database Architecture
  • Web Development

The Wintec Bachelor of Applied Information Technology is also accredited with IT Professionals NZ (TPNZ) under the Seoul Accord which confirms the quality of the programmes and supports global recognition. Our students are also eligible for membership to ITPNZ.

Graduate profile

Third year Wintec IT student, Adric Lloyd, is a perfect example of how internships can benefit both the student and business. 
Since completing his internship at Gallagher this year, Lloyd has been offered and accepted a permanent job with the innovative New Zealand company as a junior software engineer in its mobile team. 
Thirty-year-old Lloyd recently completed Wintec’s Bachelor of Applied Information Technology, specialising in Software Engineering, and says he’s stoked about getting a job at Gallagher. 

Career/further opportunities

The Bachelor of Applied Information Technology prepares graduates for employment in the Information Technology environment. Employment opportunities include Network Engineers, Software Engineers, Multimedia and Web Developers, Database Architects, Business/Systems Analysts, IT Project Managers, IT Managers or Network/Cyber-Security professionals.

Academic qualification equivalents

  • Achieved an overall average of 65% in the Higher Secondary School Examination or All‐India Senior School Certificate with a minimum of 60% in English;

English language requirements (one of the below):

  • IELTS           :        Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5           
  • TOEFL         :        Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)    
  • PTE              :        score of 50 with no band score lower than 42

New Zealand Living Expenses

You'll require between $20,000 and $25,000 a year ($380–480 per week) for housing/rent, food, transportation, phone bills, internet usage, and entertainment, in addition to your tuition and insurance fees. The average living expense will be the same for everyone, regardless of their tuition or course price. Please keep in mind that these are only suggestions; the Immigration New Zealand requirement is $15,000 per year including return travel or an additional $2,000.
